RALEIGH, N.C. — Here's what's happening in the General Assembly on Thursday, May 2:
  • House Health takes up bills that would repeal the motorcycle helmet requirement for riders over age 21 and legalize prescription drugs containing marijuana that have been approved by the federal government (8 a.m., 643 LOB)
  • Senate Agriculture, Environment and Natural Resources debates marine fisheries reforms, shrimp farming and veterinary regulations (10 a.m., 1124/1224 LB)
  • House State and Local Government considers measures regarding state and local compliance with immigration laws and whistleblower protections for state employees (10 a.m., 423 LOB)
  • Senate Health Care takes up a proposal to repeal the state's Certificate of Need regulations for health care facilities (10 a.m., 643 LOB)
  • Senate Commerce and Industry debates restricting wind farms along the coast and increasing fees for bounced checks (11 a.m., 1027/1128 LB)
  • Senate Judiciary considers changes to state laws on child sex abuse (12 p.m., 1124/1224 LB)
  • The House has about four dozen bills scheduled for floor votes during its noon session, including the first of two votes on its budget proposal and measures to require testing of rape kits, ban ownership of some exotic animals as pets and designating some cancers as on-the-job injuries for firefighters. An override vote on a vetoed abortion bill was pushed back to next week.
  • The Senate has about two dozen bills on its 2 p.m. floor calendar, including creating a "death by distribution" felony in drug overdose deaths and changes to the Read to Achieve childhood literacy program and to Duke Energy rate increases.
