<p>Hi Lindsay. Hi, how are you? Good, how are you? I'm great, thanks. We are with lindsey Regan back today, Director of college consulting and advantage, college planning. And in a nutshell, you help families prepare for what is one of the biggest decisions that their Children will ever make and also one of the biggest investments as well. So these are big, big decisions and we appreciate you coming and talking with us today as a lot of high school students are getting ready to select their courses for next year. How critical is that deciding those courses and making sure that you're going down the right path? Well, rigor of curriculum is the number one factor in the admissions process. So how challenging a student's courses are, ninth through 12th grade is really important as students apply to college. So we want students to be really thoughtful and intentional and make a plan. We hear about ap courses and honors courses. How important are those particular courses and are they necessary? We want students to take classes that are appropriately challenging for them. So it really all depends on the student. I talked to students all the time about taking the next step academically by challenging themselves in the classes that they love. So if a student is really passionate about a particular discipline or a particular subject area and they feel ready for honors or ap work, then I say go for it. But those classes aren't the right fit for all students. Um, so it really depends on the students and they think they should know that they need to take the next step. They need to challenge themselves academically. And how do you choose between honors ap I. B. And dual enrollment? It's almost like you need a degree just to figure it all out, you know? Right? Yeah. Well, working with school counselors, working with teachers, you know, working with the resources that are available to students in the community is key. And then again, assessing their own progress, so knowing if they've been able to earn the grades that they want to receive in the appropriate class, then go for the next level. So whether that next level is the honors course or the Ap course or if the school offers the international baccalaureate program, the I. B. Program that's a full curriculum. So, you know, students really know what they're getting into when they jump into that curriculum. And then dual enrollment options are great too. So we're fortunate to have really strong community college partnerships with our high schools in this area. And so when students have the opportunity to take classes through that means is great too. So it's really an individual decision, but I I think have the right guidance is really important. I have two high schoolers, myself and I know talking to my friends um grades seem to be a big concern for for the students. Um And and for some of the parents as well. And so you know, when making a decision, is it is it better to get, let's say a lower grade in a more challenging course, like an ap course compared to maybe getting an A in a lower course. That's the question. You've hit the nail on the head, right. That is the biggest question. And I think that it's, um, it's a balancing act. I think if a student feels like everything else starts to suffer because they've taken on too challenging of the course load, then it's appropriate to take a step back. But I think if they can still get enough sleep, have time for their activities and still manage their academic life, then they're in the right place. Even if that means not earning all a's the all a thing. I think, um, can be a little overrated sometimes when students struggle in a class and sometimes when they, you know, try something and it didn't necessarily work out that experience of failure can lead to even more growth. So I think it's better to take the risk appropriately and then take the next step as you assess what happened as the result of that risk. Um, so I guess I'm in the mindset of, let's go forward. Let's try that harder class. Even if that means your grade is not going to be perfect shows the effort. And what about as far as foreign languages are concerned, it's changed so much since I was in school. And um, it was my understanding that these Children should be taking at least two years of or or to foreign languages um during the course of their high school. But I heard just recently that you may need even more depending on where you're going to school. How are those foreign languages? What do you need? Good point. Um Yeah to graduate from high school from north Carolina and to enroll in a north Carolina public institution and any U. N. C. System school a student needs two years of the same foreign language. So spanish one and spanish too. Those are the minimum requirements are contiguous states. So if a student wanted to attend college outside of north Carolina and south Carolina or in Virginia those requirements are amped up a little bit. They asked students to take through the third level of the same foreign language. And so I encourage students Um to take at least three units of that same foreign language. So go forward to Spanish three. But again there's always going to be a caveat if foreign language just isn't your thing and you are barely surviving through the second level of that foreign language then maybe that's okay and let's you know choose a different path. But I would say that for the majority of students choosing that third level of the same foreign language is the right choice. And finally Lindsay I had a friend the other day who said she was trying to convince her son to take the S. A. T. Because um you know it's it's been in the news a lot lately that a lot of schools are not looking at S. A. T. S. And she said her son didn't want to waste his time if it wasn't gonna be required. You know what advice do you have for parents and students who are weighing whether or not they want to take this standardized test which as we reported recently is going to change in the coming years but for right now what should they do? Yeah we still encourage students to test. So your friend is right to pressure her student to take the test. There are so many colleges that are test optional and we do see that test scores are becoming less impactful in the admissions process which I think is a great thing because day in and day out the students effort in high school is really what matters. And that really demonstrates that they're ready for the next step educationally. But as you say we don't have a crystal ball, we don't know what's really going to happen with test testing in the admissions process. So it's still the smart move to prepare for and take the S. A. T. And A. C. T. Good advice you are also offering at advantage college planning some free valuable workshops at schools across our area. We're going to list all of the details so you can look in that blog. But in a nutshell for parents? Um why should they attend one of these workshops? Why are they valuable? What are some of the things that they can take away from from these workshops that you will be offering free of charge? Yeah, we love to provide information to our community. That is valuable. That's real. That's true. I mean, I think there's so much misinformation out there and there's so much anxiety um and pressure around this process that we just want to demystify it and take the stress out of planning for and paying for college. And so we want to help students and families through this process with as much information that we can. So I think that's really important and we'll list all of the dates and times on this blog on WRL dot com. Meteorologist Anthony Baglione here on this Friday where we're still looking at some relatively warm temperatures into this afternoon. 83 is where we should hit for a high temperature. Nice and quiet for us until we get later on into late this afternoon into this evening where we're gonna watch the potential for some showers and storms coming through. Not a ton of activity for us as we head later on into tonight. There's a look at rain chances though. They go up to about 50% as we head into that evening time frame. So if you have any plans tonight, if you want to go out and get a Friday evening dinner or something like that, it might be a good idea to a, get the indoor table and then b bring along the reindeer just in case tonight. Here's a look at Future cast. So we time this out looking pretty quiet here the next couple of hours that band back to our west, it should start to weaken as it gets closer to us. It may try and restrengthen them as we get into. Like there's four o'clock you can see on Futurecast 56 o'clock or so, some of those storms could be on the stronger side and then it pushes out of here as we get later on into tonight and then we see maybe a stray shower potential still outline for tomorrow morning. Here's a look at our severe potential today. Level one out of five for most of the viewing area. What this is saying is there could be some isolated pockets where we get some stronger storms. It looks like the best chances for that would be west of us. But gusty winds would be our primary threat as we get into this evening. 78 is where we go for our Saturday. A huge temperature swing there into Sunday at 59 scattered showers are gonna be likely though, especially Sunday afternoon into Sunday evening, they do start to taper off though late Sunday night. So for the Tar Heel 10 miler, that's tomorrow morning, we are proud partners of that. We're going to see temperatures in the sixties for the majority of the forecast there. A stray showers possible, but most of the morning is looking just fine for that event. Tomorrow. We head over the next seven. We go from 83 today all the way down to 59 on Sunday. A rebound of 66 on Monday and then a nice week next week attempts in the seventies, even a few upper sixties there Thursday looking pretty quiet after we get some rainfall there to close out our weekend.</p>
