Tillis campaign says counting all votes still won't add up to Cunningham Senate victory
Republican U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis is on track to survive a tough re-election challenge in North Carolina, potentially protecting the Senate from a Democratic takeover.
IT APPEARS TOM TILLIS SUCCESSFULLY FENDED OFF KYLE CUNNINGHAM. >> Reporter: RIGHT NOW, SENATOR TILLIS IS LEADING BY ABOUT 96,000 VOTES, BUT JUST AFTER MIDNIGHT, HE ALREADY MADE HIS SPEECH CLAIMING VICTORY. >> WITH SIX MORE YEARS IN THE U.S. SENATE, I WILL WORK TIRELESSLY TO MAKE SURE WE CONTINUE TO PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES AND CONTINUE TO FULFILL PROMISES, AND CONTINUE TO MAKE THIS NATION AND THE STATE AS GREAT AS IT CAN POSSIBLY BE. >> THE DEMOCRATIC CHALLENGER KYLE CUNNINGHAM WAS SCHEDULED TO SPEAK BUT DID NOT. MORE THAN 117,000 ABSENTEE BALLOTS ARE STILL OUT THERE. IT IS UNCLEAR HOW MANY OF THOSE WOULD BE RETURNED. IT WAS THE MOST EXPENSIVE RACE IN SENATE HISTORY.
