RALEIGH, N.C. — The General Assembly adjourned for the year on Thursday.

Before leaving town, the House passed bills providing $18 million in incentives to lure a "sports championship company" to North Carolina and doled out about $1 billion in federal coronavirus pandemic relief funds to families, unemployed workers and others.

House Democrats complained that the package didn't expand Medicaid to thousands of low-income adults, help businesses that have had to shut down during the pandemic and appeared to punish arts groups in Wake and Mecklenburg counties – their legislators are almost exclusively Democrats – by not including them in money handed out to similar organizations elsewhere.

Meanwhile, Vice President Mike Pence visited a women's clinic and a church in Raleigh, where he met with abortion opponents. Coincidentally, abortion rights advocates filed suit against various state regulations of abortions, including a three-day waiting period.
