RALEIGH, N.C. — Several Democratic House members marked the anniversary of the Parkland, Fla., school shooting by filing a bill calling for various gun restrictions in North Carolina.

Similar efforts have been made every year since a 2012 school shooting in Connecticut, and this one is likely headed for a similar fate in the Republican-controlled legislature.

Meanwhile, Gov. Roy Cooper and several environmental groups criticized the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's plan for toxic chemicals like GenX, saying it doesn't go nearly far or fast enough to address threats to health and water.

The legislature shut down early Thursday so that Cooper and lawmakers could head to Greenville to attend the funeral of longtime 3rd District Congressman Walter Jones, who died last weekend.
