DURHAM, N.C. — Durham police arrested three young men last week in connection with a series of break-ins of vehicles.

Someone called police just before 3:30 a.m. on April 19 to report that cars were being broken into in the 4600 block of Hope Valley Road. When officers arrived, they caught the trio in the progress of a break-in.

The suspects ran, but police were able to track them all down.

Nizer Bennett, 16, was charged with two counts of breaking and entering a motor vehicle.

Jacarri Lassiter, 16, was charged with two counts of breaking and entering a motor vehicle and one count of resisting a public officer.

Messiah Whitted, 16, was charged with three counts of breaking and entering a motor vehicle, one count of resisting a public officer and one count of possession of stolen property.

The Durham Police Department offered the following crime prevention tips to help decrease vehicle break-ins:

  • Do not leave valuables in your vehicle.
  • Keep a record of serial numbers for items such as stereo equipment, electronics and other personal items.
  • Keep your vehicle in a well-lighted area.
  • Report suspicious activity to 911.
  • Secure your vehicle at all times. Lock your doors.
