ENFIELD, N.C.Body-worn camera released Friday shows the moment someone fired shots at a Halifax County deputy interviewing two men about an earlier shooting.

At about 9:30 p.m. Thursday, the deputy was standing outside in a neighborhood at the corner of Dennis and Bryant streets asking possible witnesses about a shooting that occurred earlier in the evening at the Carriage House apartment complex in Enfield.

According to the Halifax County Sheriff's Office, one person was shot in the head and a second person was shot in both legs at the apartment complex around 8 p.m. Both were transported to a hospital.

Enfield Police Chief Eric Johnson said it appears both victims are also the shooting suspects and exchanged gunshots at each other.

Body-worn camera with sound that may be disturbing to some viewers shows the deputy an hour later standing in a neighborhood and speaking with two men who may have witnessed the shooting.

Suddenly, around 15 rapid gunshots can be heard in the video as the deputy requests backup, saying the shots originated from a white home across the street.

The deputy can be heard yelling, "Shots fired, shots fired, shots fired! North Dennis and West Bryant! Shots fired at law enforcement!," as he ushers the two men to shelter behind the car and "stay down."

No one was injured, and the deputy never fired his own weapon.

Sheriff Tyree Davis said, "The deputy’s quick response to this very stressful situation of shots being fired at him and others was extremely courageous."

Sheriff's deputies are still searching for the person who shot at the deputy.

Deputies are sifting through evidence and asking the public to call Halifax County Crime Stoppers (252-583-4444) if they know anything that could help with the investigation.

Lt. Shane Guyant with the sheriff's office shared his thoughts on the footage with WRAL News.

"You can see how quickly it can go from having a casual conversation to your life being in jeopardy, and it's just a matter of milliseconds," Guyant said. "The assailant here is shooting towards these three individuals. If you zoom in closely you can see the outline of a person, a figure."

The sheriff's office said it released the body camera footage within hours of the crime to find the person who shot at the deputy and to show the dangers of the job.
