ERNUL, N.C. — The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating after a deputy fired a weapon at a Craven County man Friday evening.

The Craven County Sheriff’s Office on Friday afternoon began searching for a man who has posted a video online depicting self-harm. Deputies said the man was known to law enforcement as having previously threatened to commit suicide.

Deputies said they searched the man’s last known location on Saint Delight Church Road as they issued a warning to the public to be on the lookout for the man, who was believed to be armed and dangerous.

The man was spotted in a wooded area of 4490 Highway 17 North in Ernul, NC at about 5:10 p.m., but he refused to comply with commands issued by approaching deputies, authorities said.

Deputies said the man “posed a threat of bodily harm to the officers” and an investigator fired his weapon as a result.

Authorities did not say if the man was injured or if the deputy will be placed on administrative leave during the investigation.
