DURHAM, N.C. — Thousands of year-round North Carolina students will return to school on Monday in the midst of a heat wave.

In Cumberland County, 16 school buses will be on the roads delivering 1,682 children to E. E. Miller Elementary, Anne Chesnutt Middle and Reid Ross Classical School.

In Durham, five schools -- Easley Elementary, Holt Elementary, Pearsontown Elementary, Rogers-Herr Middle School and The School for Creative Studies -- will reopen for more than 3,000 year-round students.

To keep students and teachers safe in the oppressive heat, Durham Public Schools has made some changes to accommodate the high temperatures.

Officials told WRAL News each bus being used for year-round schools is going to have air conditioning, and maintenance staff recently serviced the HVAC systems to prepare them for the school year.

According to Janet DelPinal with Durham Public Schools, staff working in the buildings throughout the summer didn't experience many cooling issues.

Air conditioners at Cumberland County Schools will also be working hard to keep kids cool as they return to class. According to officials, Dr. Marvin Connelly, Jr., the superintendent of Cumberland County Schools will visit all three schools to welcome students and walk through the schools.
