CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Republican U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis announced Monday he will have surgery in North Carolina next week to treat prostate cancer.

In a statement, he said the prognosis is "good" because the cancer was detected "relatively early."

"I am in the hands of outstanding medical professionals and expect to make a full recovery," Tillis' statement read. “I am blessed that my cancer was detected relatively early, and I can’t emphasize enough how important routine screenings are, regardless of how healthy you think you are."

Tillis said the cancer was detected at his annual physical. He said he had no symptoms and "would have never imagined I had cancer."
