GOLDSBORO, N.C. — Goldsboro residents gathered at city hall Monday to demand action after a shooting Wednesday.
The shooting left 15-year-old Joyonna Pearsall dead and five others injured. The injured have since been released from the hospital and are recovering at home.

Dozens of neighbors and family members of the six teens spoke at the event including Pearsall's family, who said the owners of the property need to be held liable, as they claimed the property was being used as an illegal event space.

"We want answers, we want resolution," said one family member. "We want something to be done!"

Goldsboro Mayor David Ham confirmed the property had tried, and failed, to get the home rezoned as a B&B, but had continued to hold events anyway.

"The owners, to my knowledge, have not committed any criminal violations," Ham added.

Ham said the city had sent the property owner multiple notices over the last three years, and has now delivered them a cease & desist order in the wake of the shooting.

The owners of the property were in just as much shock about the shooting as Goldsboro residents.

"I'm in shock of what happened," said Blondine Knelsen, owner of the home. "I was inside and heard the gunshots. I don't know the specifics of how this happened. I'm cooperating with the investigation taking place."

Knelsen said she had no further comments.

Now, Goldsboro residents are trying to make changes happen in the city to curb the violence.

"We as a community must act to stem the tide of bloodshed, and the hatred that drives it," said one resident.

"It's time for us to come together, work with the city, work with the police department, work with our churches and our communities," said another resident.

Pearsall's aunt Maria Bell said she wants to see a law put in place, one that would put people in jail for 190 days for having an unregistered gun.

"They need to be held accountable," Bell said. "They need to know that you're going down for what you've done."

Goldsboro police are still searching for a suspect in the shooting.
