RAEFORD, N.C. — On Monday Tavares Harrington, 34, was shot and killed by Raeford police officers.

According to the Chief Marc Godwin, the shooting occurred around 7:30 p.m. on East Sixth Street. Officers responded to a call of a disturbance at the address.

When police arrived on scene, they were met by Harrington, who was apparently being loud and causing a disturbance.

Godwin said Harrington pointed a gun at two uniformed police officers, and the officers "drew their weapons and fired at the assailant in self-defense."

The officers were not injured. Harrington was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two officers are on leave after the ordeal.

On Tuesday, Harrington's father said his son was experiencing a mental health episode and believes police should have used a non-lethal method.

"They deliberately killed my son on my birthday," said Larry McRae. "They got away with murder."

"He yelled out please don’t shoot him," McRae said. "Because he’s bipolar and he’s got another sickness and he wasn’t on his medicine."

McRae painted the picture of a traumatic scene.

"When he fell, he fell beside me," McRae said. "He wiggled, and that’s it. He was gone."

The officers were wearing body cameras at the time. The names of the officers are not being released pending an investigation by the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation.

More information will released when it becomes available.
