CARY, N.C. — Theatre Raleigh is planning new twists and turns during its presentation of Rocky Horror Show this weekend at Cary Booth Amphitheater.
The show features a mixture of Broadway talent and local actors (including YouTube sensation Penn Holderness) playing well-known characters from the cult-classic.

The director and choreographer of the production is also a well known Broadway talent that has been recruited to direct the show.

Dancer and choreographer Abbey O'Brien, a 15 year Broadway veteran, was recruited to direct the show.

"About five or so years ago, I all of a sudden became really interested in the other side and creating," O'Brien said Wednesday. "I quit dancing cold turkey and said bye to preforming and pushed to be a director and choreographer."

Since ending her dancing career, she has directed and choreographed multiple productions on and off the Broadway stage. Now, she is using her expertise to bring a rendition of The Rocky Horror Show to Cary that is true to the original script but has some small new additions.

One thing that many followers of the cult-classic know to be true is that, audience participation is a huge part of the production.

"The audience participation is really exciting for people who are such fans of Rocky Horror," O'Brien said. "Over the years since this show was created more audience participation keeps getting added on. So it's its own script ...We will be having screens up on the stage that will, for the first part of the show, help encourage those of us who are ...'virgins'... As well as you get a prop bag. And that prop bag has all of these things like a newspaper, a water pistol, bells and all of these things that you're supposed to do during the show."

The 'fun pack' or prop bag with extra tools to increase audience participation in the show must be bought separately from the ticket.

O'Brien has also added in other elements to freshen up the original classic.

"It's a little edger," O'Brien said. "It's a little hipper...We have also added some fun extra commentary through out."

The Rocky Horror Show Live Musical is showing in Cary, N.C.

The show marks Holderness' acting debut. The YouTuber plays Riff Raff.

"The corny cheese ball that's on YouTube and Facebook meets a creepy henchman murderer," Holderness said of his character. "The result is going to be what you see out there, which could be really great or it could be really weird, who knows. It's art."

To prepare for the role, Holderness sought advice from local theater veterans.

"You should go buy a ticket to watch your local theater preform," Holderness said. "Because it's an amazing group of people. They are some of the most talented people in your city."

Famous for creating musical parodies with his family on social media, Holderness said he didn't think he would be able to make a career out of YouTube.

"I thought my career was going to be doing website management and promotional videos for companies," he said.

The Rocky Horror Show plays Booth Amphitheatre Saturday and Sunday.
