DURHAM, N.C.The Streetery returns to downtown Durham on Friday after closing in December due to rising coronavirus cases.

The outdoor event is meant to highlight local restaurants and live music while keeping people safe and socially distanced.

Masks are required anytime you aren't eating.

Several streets will be blocked off to cars so pedestrians can shop and dine.

The Streetery will run from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights in the center of downtown, which will be filled with festive lights, music and performers. Shops will be open and restaurants will be offering outdoor and indoor dining and carry-out services. A map of participating businesses is available online.

Organizers expect the event will be expanded in April as the weather gets warmer.

Business owners said that past Streetery events have boosted their morale and the economy.

"It brings energy, it gives sort of the 'We're open' sign and signal to the rest of the Triangle to come downtown," said one business owner.
