MANTEO, N.C. — The 2021 season of "The Lost Colony," a play based on one of North Carolina's most famous mysteries, has come to an end after a cast member tested positive for COVID-19.
After the 2020 season was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, the 84th season returned on May 28 as the country's longest running outdoor drama and the Outer Banks' most popular attraction.

The 2020 season marked the first time a season had been canceled since 1944 due to World War II.

Now it has again been cut short due to COVID-19, organizers announced Thursday.

"The Lost Colony" is performed nightly each summer at Waterside Theatre on Roanoke Island. Only a few performances were canceled, as the season was to end on Aug. 21. Ticket holders can contact the box office at 252-473-6000 for a full refund.
