CNN — The 2020 election is November 3. That's 173 days from now.

There are two massive figures running for the nation's highest office. The current President, a larger-than-life reality star unlike any person who has ever held the job, and a former vice president, who has spent the better part of five decades in public life.

And the public's reaction to all of this? Zzzzz.

Less than 6 in 10 Americans say they have given "quite a lot" of thought to the coming election while 39% say they've spent "only a little" or no time contemplating it, according to a new Gallup national poll.

Compare those numbers to Gallup data at similar times in the 2016 and 2012 races and you see a major difference. Three-quarters of Americans in mid-May 2016 and in mid-April 2012 said they were spending "quite a lot" of time thinking about the coming presidential election.

Gallup's most recent data shows significant slippage among Democrats and Republicans on the mindshare question since February. At that time, 67% of Americans said they were thinking a lot about the election.

The obvious reason for the erosion of interest in the all-consuming nature of the coronavirus pandemic and the country's fight against it. The disease has literally pushed every other story to the side -- including the election.

The real question is not why people are thinking less about the election than in past races. It's when -- or if -- they will turn to thinking about it in a serious way, particularly if the virus continues to sicken and kill people.

And take that one step further: Does a shortened campaign -- at least in terms of public interest -- benefit Donald Trump or Joe Biden more?

The Point: With predictions that coronavirus could well be with us through the fall, and that we might even be looking at a second surge, will the presidential race ever break through in a meaningful way?
