K-9s in law enforcement and rescue operations continue to prove their worth. That was the case recently in Moore County where a woman with cognitive issues went missing in the dark of night.

Moore County Sheriff's Deputy Kevin Dean is a K-9 handler, with Officer Roki, a Czech Shepherd, who with a sharp sense of smell.

He can pick up an odor from a paper clip, much less an empty gun.

A real world test challenged this K9 team during a dark, rainy night on Sept. 11.

The family of a woman called for help — saying the woman had walked outside and away from home.

"We have a lot of retirement centers in Moore county. A lot of residents walking off from places," said Dean.

Other deputies teamed up with Deputy Dean and Roki.

Then, Roki picked up a scent.

"That dog took a hard left turn [and] went off into the field," said Dean.

Within 40 minutes, Roki led law enforcement through an overgrown field and straight to the woman.

"Corporal Williams actually put up the flash light to see the top of her head, over the top of the grass. It was waist high," said Dean.

"I got her cupped under one arm and [Corporal Williams] got her up under her other arm and we stood her up," he said. "As she was standing up, that's when they took [a] picture."

The picture may look staged with Roki standing at attention. It's perfectly framed and back-lit.

But it's a real moment in time in a joyous moment of relief.

"I'm going to have that one framed in my house. That means the world to me," said Dean.
