RALEIGH, N.C. — It's a mild Christmas this year, with temperatures reaching the upper 50s and no rain in the forecast.

A dome of high pressure is keeping mild air in place across the nation, WRAL meteorologist Peta Sheerwood said.

This Christmas is a bit warmer than last year, when high temperatures were at 50 degrees.

But it’s a good bit cooler than the warmest Christmas on record in the area: Temperatures climbed up to 75 degrees in 1955.

While skies will be mostly cloudy on Wednesday, no rain is expected.

“Relish these conditions while they’re in place because we know the weather story is going to change, and it will likely change by the time we get into this weekend,” Sheerwood said.

A dip in the jet stream will allow a storm off the Pacific Northwest to move eastward and into North Carolina. While Saturday looks like it will be cloudy, there's a 40% chance of rain on Sunday.

Temperatures will be in the mid-60s through the rest of the week, and Sunday’s high is expected to hit 69 degrees.

Temperatures drop Monday, with highs in the mid-50s and partly cloudy skies.
