RALEIGH, N.C. — Temperatures were below freezing again Thursday morning and will stay cold for the remainder of the day, but much warmer weather will be here in time for the weekend.

Temperatures were in the teens and 20s across central North Carolina on Thursday morning, including 22 degrees in Raleigh, 21 degrees in Durham and 18 degrees in Roxboro. Highs will be in the mid 30s by late Thursday afternoon, but temperatures will dip into the 20s again overnight.

Starting Friday, there will be some slight relief from the cold. Highs will reenter the mid 50s on Friday, and the upper 50s on Saturday, and wind chill will not be an issue.

7-Day Forecast

The real treat comes Sunday, when highs climb lower 60s. Sunday and the start of the new work week will be even warmer, with highs in the mid 60s on Monday and the lower 70s on Tuesday and Wednesday.

“That seems incredible, but it does happen” Gardner said.

While most of the country is experiencing extreme cold, temperatures will be warmer than average in North Carolina for the first week of February.
