FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — The teenage daughter of a Fayetteville city councilwoman was shot to death on Friday night.

Coryonna Young, a 10th grader at Seventy-First High School and the daughter of councilmember Courtney Banks-McLaughlin, was found with a fatal gunshot wound, according to police. She was 15.

"To the community: the family appreciates your prayers, concerns and continued support. My prayer is for the community to stop this senseless violence," Banks-McLaughlin said in a statement.

Officers and EMS responded to the report of a shooting at 6:57 p.m. Friday and pronounced Young dead at the scene. No arrests have been made in the case as of Monday afternoon.

Officials said the individuals involved were both teenagers and they knew each other.

Mayor Mitch Colvin issued a statement on Monday.

"We are all heartbroken to hear about the tragic loss of our colleague’s daughter," Colvin wrote. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Councilwoman Banks-McLaughlin and her family.”

This is the second time this month a Seventy-First student has been shot-to-death. On Oct. 8, 17-year-old De'Marus Chambliss was pumping gas at a station in Southern Pines when investigators say an acquaintance shot him multiple times.

Four people have been arrested and face a variety of charges in that case.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting are under investigation by members of the Fayetteville Police Department’s Homicide Unit.

WRAL News has reached out to the school superintendent and to the mayor for a statement and additional information.
