Sheriff confident in 'finding answers' after Apex teen found shot in home

The 17-year-old was found around 2:30 a.m. by her father, officials said. She had multiple gunshot wounds. She was rushed to WakeMed but died later Thursday morning.

“Our deputies discovered a juvenile female in the residence on the floor,” said Eric Curry, spokesperson with the Wake County Sheriff's Office.

Detectives say there was no sign of forced entry at the home. They believe the shooter was someone the girl knew.

“We have a person of interest," Sheriff Gerald Baker said. "We are trying to investigate a little bit more to try to get that person identified. We can talk with him and try to find out exactly what happened.”

Curry said the shooter ran from the home. Through the early morning hours, police dogs searched the woods around the property to try and pick up his trail.

Even though the suspect is at large, officials said they do not believe that person is a danger to the public.

“I feel very good about finding the answers to what happened," Baker said.
