DURHAM, N.C. — A 14-year-old girl from Mexico is currently at Duke University Hospital battling leukemia. She now has her mom by her side to help.

Around four months ago, Ixcell Perez -- who was born in Raleigh and is a US citizen -- and her mother, Dalia, were trying to return to the area for treatment of Ixcell's leukemia. However, her mother was detained at the US border. A relative eventually got the teen to the hospital.

Solidarity-now.com has been reporting on the situation and on Wednesday, news broke that Dalia Perez was allowed entry into the US to join her daughter. WRAL's Rosalia Fodera was there when Dalia Perez was reunited with her daughter at Raleigh-Durham International Airport Wednesday night. Fodera confirmed Dalia Perez was granted a humanitarian parole from the US Customs and Border Patrols. It was advocated by Solidarity Now.

“Nurses know how important it is to have a loved one at your side when you struggle through a difficult treatment like this,” said Bonnie Castillo, National Nurses United (NNU) Executive Director, to Solidarity-now.com. “By blocking her mother at the border, this administration is causing harm and lasting trauma to both the child and mother.

“The pain of Ixcell’s illness is being compounded by the added stress of being separated from her mother. The last thing a child needs is this kind of toxic stress when she should be saving all of her physical and emotional strength to fight her cancer.”

Solidarity-now.com reports a grassroots group in the Triangle area jumped in to help Ixcel and Dalia Perez. Rep. David Price wrote a letter urging Customs and Border Patrol to issue a visa for Dalia. Ixcell Perez’s doctor also wrote letters asking for Dalia Perez to be permitted into the US.

Dalia Perez and an attorney tried before to get permission to enter the US, on July 25, Solidarity-now.com reports. They were denied entry.
