HOPE MILLS, N.C. — A Parkton teen has been charged with animal cruelty in connection with the death of a 1-week-old puppy, authorities said.

Jeffrey Kyle Pomeroy, 17, of 7311 Acropolis Drive, is charged with felony breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering, possession of stolen goods and felony cruelty to animals. He has been released on a $2,000 unsecured bond.

Authorities said someone broke into a residence on LaFayette Street in Hope Mills on July 18, grabbed the puppy from a kennel and later beat the animal with a baseball bat, set it afire and buried it in another yard.

Pomeroy's former girlfriend lived in the house that was burglarized, authorities said.

Deputies arrested Pomeroy Tuesday night after being called to his home to respond to a domestic disturbance.
