'Teachers will be disappointed': Coding error causes confusion with NC teacher bonuses

State education leaders say a coding error in third-grade reading data caused some North Carolina teachers to mistakenly believe they were getting bonuses. The error also delayed bonuses to other teachers who should have received them based on how their students performed on end-of-grade reading tests last year.

RALEIGH, N.C. — State education leaders say a coding error in third-grade reading data caused some North Carolina teachers to mistakenly believe they were getting bonuses. The error also delayed bonuses to other teachers who should have received them based on how their students performed on end-of-grade reading tests last year.
The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction "immediately alerted (school systems) and charter schools to the potential issue and instructed school systems to refrain from taking any action on the third-grade reading bonuses," according to a note sent to HR directors. "NCDPI understands that teachers will be disappointed to learn that they are no longer eligible for the state or (school system) bonuses."
The error was first reported by Justin Parmenter, a Charlotte teacher and education blogger.

Wake County Public School System spokeswoman Lisa Luten told WRAL News Thursday that teachers in her district were not affected, other than some of their bonuses being delayed, because the school system learned of the error and didn't share the incorrect bonus information with teachers.
