RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina teachers are being prioritized when it comes to getting the coronavirus vaccine. They will be included in the second phase of the state's vaccine rollout plan.

But, many school districts don't have detailed plans for getting their staff vaccinated.

Wayne County Public Schools choir teacher Tiffany Kilgore said she's so confident in the vaccine, she thinks it should be a requirement.

Kilgore said she wants nothing more than to get back to working in-person with her students.

"The interaction we have with kids ... it's such a part of what we do, and I miss it so much," she described.

Yet, as someone who has had COVID and surgeries because of the complications that have come after, Kilgore said she's OK with staying far away from group settings for now.

"I'm still learning how to use my right arm and hand because I had to have a new artery put in because I had COVID blood clots, just out of nowhere," said Kilgore.

Kilgore sees the vaccine as a return to normalcy, and as president of the Wayne County chapter of North Carolina Association of Educators, she wants to lead by example and get the vaccine as soon as she can.

"I’ve had a negative reaction to a vaccine in the past, but I’m still gong to get vaccinated," Kilgore said.

"I'm hoping that the school requires us [to get vaccinated.] I can understand why people don't want to, and those are conversations I'd be willing to have with individuals, but if [we] want to see our kids and we want to be back in the classrooms like we were, then we need to buck up and get the vaccine," she added.
