— Tracy Byas made sure her special-needs students navigated the challenges of remote learning.

Byas had been working at Western Harnett High School for just three weeks when the pandemic changed everything for her five special needs students.

"They don't understand that even though they're at home, they're at school on the computer," she said. "So it was a huge challenge."

Byas adapted her lessons and made it work.

"Some kids were doing their stuff, in their pajamas, on the couch, eating, drinking," she said. "So it was very untraditional."

Byas said she gets lots of support from the school, her teacher's assistant and parents to help her students succeed.

"It's very challenging -- it's hard," she said. "But it's very rewarding."
