Teacher of the Week: Lillie Herman
Lillie Herman, WRAL's Teacher of the Week for March 31, 2021, has a unique bond with her students at New Hope Elementary in Orange County.

THE TEACHER OF THE WEEK MAKES INCLUSION HER TOP PRIORITY. >> Reporter: LILY HERMAN WANTED TO BE A TEACHER SINCE THE THIRD GRADE. SHE DEVELOPED A PASSION FOR TEACHING STUDENTS WITH FUNCTIONAL NEEDS. SHE NOW TEACHES A SELF-CONTAINED CLASS AT NEW HOPE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. >> WE GET TO BE A FAMILY. I HAVE WONDERFUL TEACHER ASSISTANTS. ALSO, OUR KIDS ARE OUR KIDS. WE HAVE THEM FOR MULTIPLE YEARS. >> Reporter: SHE MAKES SURE THEY HAVE FUN IN THE SUMMER. SHE ATTENDED AND WORKED AT THE NEW HOPE CAMP AND CONFERENCE CENTER FOR YEARS AND REALIZED THERE WERE NOT MANY SUMMER CAMP OPTIONS FOR CHILDREN WITH FUNCTIONAL NEEDS. >> I WORKED WITH THE CAMP AND THEY WERE SO GREAT TO ME. WE WORKED OUT A SUMMER CAMP FOR THEM TO COME. >> Reporter: HERMAN IS FOCUSED ON INCLUSION FOR HER STUDENTS. SHE MAKES SURE THEY INTERACT WITH EVERYONE ELSE. >> WE'RE LUCKY WE HAVE A SELF-CONTAINED. WE GET TO OPEN THAT UP TO OUR STUDENTS IN THE SCHOOL. >> Reporter: HELPING STUDENTS GROW AND LEARN, EVEN IF THEY ARE NOT IN HER CLASS.
