TAYLORTOWN, N.C. — A council member of a small Moore County town wants its former mayor to take office again.

Councilwoman Charlotte Worthy put forth a proposal Tuesday night to reinstate Ulysses S. G. Barrett Jr. to the post. Barrett, who served for more than a decade, still sits on the Town Council.

Barrett was arrested and charged in 2007 on charges that he benefitted from a public contract as a public official and illegally acting as town manager. He was cleared of all wrongdoing earlier this year.

Worthy said reinstating Barrett was the right thing to do because he has the most knowledge of any other board member.

The proposal passed 3-1, with Jesse Fuller, who was appointed mayor in November, voting against.
