TARBORO, N.C. — Sara Lee Frozen Bakery, which makes baked desserts, treats and snacks, will create 108 jobs as it expands its food manufacturing center in Edgecombe County, officials said Monday.

The company will invest an additional $19.8 million in the Tarboro bakery.

"Sara Lee Frozen Bakery recently celebrated the 30-year anniversary of our Tarboro bakery – a milestone that demonstrates the dedication of our employees and our commitment to the Tarboro community," Chief Executive Craig Bahner said in a statement.

Although the company was officially formed in 2018 as part of a divestiture from Tyson Foods, the Sara Lee brand has existed since the 1950s and is renowned for its desserts.

The Tarboro bakery already employs more than 650 people and produces an array of foods, including croissants, biscuits, pound cake, muffins, brownies and cheesecake.

Salaries for the new jobs will average $40,266, compared with Edgecombe County's average annual salary of $34,401, officials said.

Sara Lee qualified for a grant of $500,000 from the One North Carolina Fund, which matches local funds to help attract economic investment. Companies receive no money upfront and must meet job and investment targets to be paid.

Sara Lee also has bakeries in Michigan and Massachusetts.
