Sunday, Oct. 11, 2020 --  I motored along the shoreline of the Chowan River admiring giant cypress trees growing well out into the water. We beached the skiff on several occasions to look at steep sand cliffs -- distinct layers of shells, sand, and clay -- showing hundreds of thousands of years of coastal history. Standing on a narrow beach at sea level, we were acutely aware that sea level had been higher and lower many times over the last two million years (the Ice Ages).

WRAL's Joe Fisher has the latest from Nash County where flooding from the Tar River continues, catching many residents off guard and leading to another day of water rescues.

well, The worst is now over, but floodwaters remain extremely high in Nash County tonight. Today, people were forced to abandon their homes and cars just to get to safety. WR Ailes Joe Fisher is alive in Rocky Mount tonight. Joe residents say they were really surprised and caught off guard that it got as bad as it did. Catherine caught off guard is a good way to put it. This is the third highest level of the Tar River on record, and many say that they were surprised that it got this high. It's just bad tonight. The Tar River remains above flood stage, but the water is starting to recede after trapping people in their homes and saturating Rocky mountain areas like Sunset Park. It's not a water in town, not a beer. Not a lot of street is closed. Onda need to check the sunset bark if it's open or not. On this flooded, the river crested at more than 25 feet, just two feet lower than Hurricane Matthew four years ago and three feet lower than Hurricane Floyd in 99. This time around, the water came with no name. Storm, just rain couldn't expect that we have no other in the last couple of days of three days. The swollen river force people to abandon their cars. This business protected with sandbags. The high water is keeping roads closed tonight, and it'll likely be Saturday before this area dries out and the river is expected to crest again tomorrow downstream in Tar bro. But the levels are not expected to get nearly as high as they were during Hurricane Matthew. Katherine. A bit of relief there. Joe Fischer live in Nash County. Joe, Thank you. Now this is where the Tar River winds through. Nash County meteorologist Mike Maze joining us now to tell us where the water level stands now, and when the flooding will completely subside. For Tarboro, it's a different story is later on next week that it will be below flood stage, so it may take a little while, but we're seeing improvement in Rocky Mount 26.54 is the current crest now. Last night we were forecasting 25.2. Now it actually went up two feet more so. That's why a lot of folks in Rocky Mount were caught off by surprise are caught by surprise.
