RALEIGH, N.C. — Looking for a place to grab a nice, cold ice cream cone on a hot summer day? You might have driven past FRESH on Glenwood Avenue just north of Crabtree Valley Mall a million times. Now it's time to make a stop.

A super cute walk-up shop near Pleasant Valley Promenade, FRESH has several tables for families, along with cornhole boards and a giant Connect 4. It’s the perfect place for a summer afternoon or evening with the family. (And it can get busy in the evenings.)

Owned by Brett Hellman, FRESH is a family business that features locally made ice cream that is hormone and antibiotic free. All ingredients are sourced from local dairy farms and the ice cream is made in-store.

They offer an array of flavors—usually 16 to 22—like salted caramel fudge, Kona coffee, banana pudding and midnight brownie (a personal family favorite). Four flavors change out each month. You can check their social media sites on the first of the month to find out the new flavors.

My son and I highly recommend the chocolate shake; it was delicious. Can’t have dairy? No worries as they have several non-dairy options made with almond milk too.

A kids cup or cone will run you $3.95 and comes with sprinkles (optional, of course). They even have sundaes for dogs.

FRESH is located at 6033 Glenwood Ave, in Raleigh. Hours are noon to 11 p.m., Sunday through Thursday, and noon to midnight, Friday and Saturday. They also have locations at 138 East Chatham St. in Cary, and 109 North Salem St. in Apex. Hours may fluctuate based on weather.
Go Ask Mom’s Take the Kids series is your No. 1 resource for weekly ideas about kid-focused places to take your family in the Triangle and beyond. New articles are published every Friday.
