DURHAM, N.C. — Just in time for the holiday shopping season, The Streets at Southpoint in Durham opened its new children's play area this month called The Trails at Southpoint.

With an outdoor theme, the space features three play areas, including a winding slide, interactive play wall, a lending library and other opportunities to get the wiggles out while shopping with young kids at the mall. The play space is best for young children — babies to young grade schoolers. You can find it on the lower level near Macy's. It's sponsored by UNC Children's Hospital.

You might be familiar with the typical indoor mall play area with its cushiony features that kids can climb on or through. The new play space at The Trails at Southpoint is a bit more sophisticated than that with an actual two-tier play piece, similar to what you might see in an outdoor playground, complete with a mesh tunnel. There's another area dedicated to pre-walkers and their adults.

The entire play area includes plenty of woodsy-themed art and decor — from a tent to climb into to artwork of furry animals. You'll also find some seating for parents around the edge.
