RALEIGH, N.C. — What’s better than biscuits, brews (coffee or beer) and board games on a long summer day? The kind you don’t have to buy, make or clean up?

That’s the beauty of a brand new North Raleigh restaurant and board game cafe, The Kitchen Table at Relish. It’s a unique concept for families and friends to gather for a quick meal or snack while taking advantage of the establishment’s 250 board games.

Located at the intersection of Creedmoor and Millbrook roads, The Kitchen Table is the latest brainchild of Sharon May, the owner of Relish, a popular long-time neighborhood restaurant located just next door.

“The idea of a board game cafe is something my family experienced firsthand several years ago in Asheville,” May said. “We immediately fell in love with the concept and the dream for The Kitchen Table was born. No lecture intended: But so many of us (myself included), spend so much of our time connected to people only through technology. Playing board games is a great way to reconnect with family and friends – and can even set the stage for some of the best conversations about life and learning.”

Families who want to unplug for a few hours of good, old-fashioned fun can enjoy the intimate indoor cafe or the large outdoor patio. For kids, you’ll find classic favorites such as Candyland, Guess Who?, Chutes & Ladders, Bananagrams, Connect 4, Sorry!, Sequence, Uno, Jenga and Trouble – along with dozens of options your kids have probably never tried.

But, don’t worry, parents can relax and enjoy themselves while a trained “game-tender” provides great game recommendations and can also explain the rules. Adult favorites like Scrabble, Apples to Apples, Cards Against Humanity (not recommended around the kids!) and countless others stock the floor-to-ceiling library of games.

While their menu is still being tweaked, The Kitchen Table offers light breakfast, sandwiches and snacks all day and night, including a variety of homemade specialty biscuits and biscuit sandwiches, homemade jams and spreads, snacks and sides – most of which are made either on-site or sourced locally.

For lunch or dinner, kids can enjoy a corn dog, PB&J, smoked turkey sandwich or even a sliced apple with peanut butter (made homemade, right on site with NC peanuts).

They’re open at 9 a.m. seven days a week, which is great news for parents who like to get the kids out of the house early or on a rainy day. If you’re a coffee lover, you’ll appreciate brews made by trained baristas – all provided by Five Star Coffee Roasters out of Holly Springs. They're serving up the typical espresso, latte or cappuccino, along with specialty drinks like French toast latte or mint chocolate chip cappuccino,

The Kitchen Table is a great way to start the day, but they’re also open every night until 9, 10 or 11 pm depending on the day and offer cocktails and local brews, too.
