Fayetteville animal shelter offering free cat and do adoptions

Take home a dog or a cat -- for free -- at the Cumberland County, Fayettefille animal shelter until June 18.

Cumberland County Animal Services is waiving adoption fees for all pets June 13-18 the Fayetteville shelter located at 4704 Corporation Drive.

When are these pet adoptions available?

The shelter is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m.

Adopting an animal is not only free -- all adopted dogs and cats will be vaccinated, microchipped and spayed or neutered.

Thousands of dogs and cats are killed in North Carolina shelters each year because there is not enough space to hold them all. Adopting an animal from a shelter saves many lives -- the life of the animal you are taking home and the life of incoming animals who need space at the shelter.

The Fayetteville shelter has eliminated or reduced adoption fees in the past to encourage adoptions and save lives. This month, the floor of the shelter is being resurfaced as mandated by the state, further increasing the need for adoptions.

“As the resurfacing project continues, we will again temporarily lose a significant amount of housing capacity. We are also full of cats and kittens this time of year,” Animal Services Director Elaine Smith said. “We are hoping to adopt out as many pets as possible to loving homes to prevent having to potentially euthanize animals for lack of space.”
