BENSON, N.C. — An assistant manager at a Taco Bell was shot early Wednesday while he was closing the restaurant, the Johnston County Sheriff's Office and restaurant employees said.

Authorities said the shooting occurred before 3 a.m. at a KFC/Taco Bell on North Carolina Highway 210, north of Benson.

The victim was outside, closing the Taco Bell, when he was approached by an armed man who then forced him inside. The suspect robbed the restaurant and shot the victim in the thigh, authorities said.

A shooting was reported at the Taco Bell at McGee's Crossroads in Johnston County, near I-40 and NC 210.

The victim, whom restaurant employees identified as the assistant manager, set off his car alarm from inside the Taco Bell for help.

Someone at a business nearby heard the alarm and found the victim yelling for help.

The victim is "a good family man," one Taco Bell employee, Quinton Brown, said.

"It’s something that happens that’s not supposed to happen,” Brown said of the shooting.

The victim was taken to a hospital.
