TABOR CITY, N.C. — Tabor City police were searching Wednesday for a man they said deliberately wrecked a car carrying his wife and five others.

David Lee Gause is wanted on charges of felony hit-and-run with injury and driving with a revoked license.

Police said he drove a 1984 Chrysler into the path of a small 2007 Ford sport utility vehicle in the parking lot of an Economy Inn on U.S. Highway 701 on Monday night.

Maritta Graham Gause, 58, of the 5400 block of Ten Mile Road, Tabor City, died of injuries sustained in the crash, said Capt. Dean Foley of the Tabor City Police Department. Nine other people -- including five children in the Gauses' car -- were taken to the hospital. All of them are expected to recover.

David Gause could face additional charges pending the autopsy on his wife, which could take a couple of weeks, Foley said.
