RALEIGH, N.C. — An SUV crashed into a firetruck early Sunday morning while firefighters were investigating another crash.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, a white SUV traveling on Interstate-540 failed to make a 90-degree turn onto Tarheel Club Road and crashed down a tall embankment, landing upside down.

The driver, and possible passengers, abandoned the SUV and fled the scene, officials said, and a search for crash victims came up empty.

While crews were investigating the crash, a black SUV crashed into a parked firetruck. Officials said the truck was positioned to protect first responders, and its flashing lights were on. Officials said the SUV was significantly damaged and its driver was pinned inside. Crews removed the driver from the car, and he was taken to WakeMed with serious injuries.
