SUV driver charged in school bus wreck

Authorities said they believe a driver fell asleep and her SUV crossed the center line at collided head-on with a Johnston County school bus.

ANGIER, N.C. — Authorities charged an SUV driver Friday in connection with a Thursday afternoon wreck involving a school bus.

Shannon Banks, 34, of Willow Spring, was charged with reckless driving. Authorities said they believe she fell asleep while driving, and her SUV crossed the center line at collided head-on with a Johnston County school bus at the intersection of N.C. Highway 210 and N.C. Highway 50.

The bus had just left McGee's Crossroads Elementary School when the wreck occurred, authorities said.

Four students, the bus driver and Banks were taken to WakeMed for treatment of minor injuries and were released late Thursday.
