DURHAM, N.C. — A man wanted for his part in a Black Friday shooting at the Streets at Southpoint mall has surrendered to authorities, Durham police say. A second man, who was injured in the shooting, has been released from the hospital and is facing multiple charges.

Jaquaay Walton, 31, of Virginia, was charged with carrying a concealed gun after the incident. On Wednesday, police said he turned himself in but was released from jail on a $1,500 bond.

Jaquaay Walton, 31, and Romeo Pride, 26, were charged in the Black Friday shooting at Southpoint on Nov. 26, 2021.

Romeo Pride, 26, of Durham, is now out of the hospital and has been charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and carrying a concealed gun.

Police say Pride was one of three people shot on Nov. 26. Another victim as a 10-year-old, who was hurt from a bullet ricochet and suffered non-life-threatening injuries, and an adult male, who was released from the hospital that same day.

Durham police chief Patrice Andrews told local media that the shooting occurred between two groups of people who knew each other just before 3:30 p.m. on the second floor of the mall.

"The shootings in this city have got to stop," Andrews said. "We have worked with all of our federal partners to identify these individuals that are bent on coming to our community and wreaking havoc. We will be sending them to federal prison."

Andrews said the shooting was never an active shooter situation as the individuals involved fled immediately after the shooting.

The shopping mall was locked down as law enforcement responded to the situation.

A Nordstrom employee said he heard as many as six gunshots.

WRAL reporter Aaron Thomas happened to be shopping inside one of the mall's stores on Friday.

"We were in the Express store, and I was looking around at one of the clothing racks, and all of a sudden, I see this swarm of people running," Thomas said. "At that point, it's like you don't know what to do, do you run out or do you stay in the store and try to hunker down. We did lock down and they locked the doors."

On Oct. 24, police were also called to the mall for a reports of shots fired after a large fight broke out in the food court. Multiple witnesses said a gun was displayed but not fired during the fight on that day just over a month ago. Instead, people likely heard a broomstick hitting a table during the fight, according to police.
