RALEIGH, N.C. — Police were searching Tuesday for the person who opened fire on a home in southeast Raleigh, striking a 13-year-old girl several times.

Police said the girl was shot while inside a home located in the 2900 block of Oneida Court, just off of Rock Quarry Road.

Family or friends took the girl to WakeMed, which alerted police about her injury. She was hospitalized in serious but stable condition, according to officials.

Police officers were dispatched to the hospital at 1:45 Tuesday morning.

At least six bullet holes were visible in the front of the house.

Neighborhood residents were alarmed.

"It sounded like two guns shooting," said resident Dave Dibble, who has lived in the neighborhood with his family for over 20 years. "Anytime something happens to someone's kid like that, that's horrible."

Loretta Mizelle, who lives next door to the home where the girl was shot, said the incident had frightened her.

"I could have gotten shot laying on my bed," she said, adding that she hopes the girl recovers quickly.

"I hate it for the little girl because I really knew her," Mizelle said.

Authorities are investigating the shooting. Anyone with information can call Raleigh CrimeStoppers at 919-834-HELP or visit raleighcrimestoppers.org
