LAURINBURG, N.C. — The suspect in a fatal shooting at a Laurinburg Piggly Wiggly made his first court appearance Friday.

A judge ordered Aubrey Odum, 28, held without bail on a murder charge.

Police arrested Odum Thursday, alleging that he shot and killed a man who was dating his ex-girlfriend.

Detective Chris Young of the Laurinburg Police Department said Odum's ex-girlfriend, Victoria Blackwell, went to the Piggly Wiggly, at 229 E. Church St., Thursday morning with her new boyfriend, Brian McLean, 35, and her cousin. McLean went to the back of the store to confront Odum over something, and an altercation ensued, Young said.

Odum shot McLean three times, including once in the back, Young said.

Paramedics took McLean to Scotland Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Odum asked the judge Friday for a court-appointed attorney. His next appearance was scheduled for July 29.
