Suspect in fatal Cumberland County shooting arrested

A 33-year-old wanted in the Sunday shooting death of a Cumberland County man was arrested early Saturday in Lumberton, Fayetteville police said.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A 33-year-old wanted in the Sunday shooting death of a Cumberland County man was arrested early Saturday in Lumberton, Fayetteville police said.

Abu-Bark Abdur Rahman, of Bremer Street, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Desmond Deron Smith.

Authorities found Smith, 36, of Catalina Drive in Fayetteville, Sunday near a wooded area behind an apartment complex on Enterprise Avenue.

Smith was found unresponsive and appeared to have been shot, said police. Officers administered CPR until firefighters and paramedics arrived. He was transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center and was later pronounced dead.

Rahman was being held in the Cumberland County jail Saturday without bond.
