HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. — Holly Springs police are investigating the theft of a 10-week-old pit bull puppy from a Pawfect Match Rescue fundraiser on Sunday.

The blue-and-white female puppy, named Miss Percy, was taken from Niche Wine Bar in Holly Springs around 6:30 p.m.

Surveillance video showed a man and woman walked into the event, picked up the puppy and then left in a white Honda Accord.

The rescue said a pet foster parent, Debbie Sandlin, brought Miss Percy to the fundraiser, one of Pawfect Match's biggest of the year. According to the event's Facebook page, the Smooches for Pooches Holiday Auction also had live music, a food truck and a raffle.

"It's chaotic at the end because you're picking up all the bed sheets ... and everyone's getting ready to pay so they could leave," recalled volunteer Shannon Adkins.

Sandlin said the woman had asked about adopting the puppy while the fundraiser was going on.

"This person actually spoke to a volunteer and asked if she could adopt that day and was told no, she had to put in an application and what the process was. She took the dog anyway," said Sandlin.

"This is not an adoption. We have a whole adoption process we go through," she added.

Sandlin added that she's worried since the puppy isn't up-to-date on her vaccines.

"She hasn't had her rabies vaccine yet," said Sandlin. "There's all kinds of reasons why we have lots of concerns about this. My concern is, if they take this puppy around other dogs that haven't been vaccinated, this puppy is susceptible to pick up a disease from another dog."

Now, event organizers are asking for the puppy to be returned safely.

"You did something really stupid. Don't compound your stupidity by doing something else stupid. Return the dog," said Ted Powell, the owner of Nice Wine Lounge.

"You could have gone to the pound or shelter and adopted the dog. You don't come steal a rescue dog," added Sandlin.

The event was open to the public, and police are using surveillance footage and credit cards used at the event to track the thief.

"It's pretty brazen to walk up and take a dog out of the pen with hundreds of people," said Sandlin.

Anyone who recognizes Miss Percy's dognapper is asked to call Holly Springs police at 919-552-7110.
