RALEIGH, N.C. — The driver of the car that crashed down a ravine after going the wrong way on Capital Boulevard on Wednesday morning has been arrested, according to court documents.

Jordan Jamal Aytch, 27, of Raleigh, was charged with driving while impaired and felony death by vehicle.

According to an arrest warrant, Aytch was driving soutbound in the inbound lanes of Capital Boulevard around 2:30 a.m., and ran off the road and crashed into a ravine.

The passenger in his vehicle, Darius Jerrod Allen, died, police said.

Aytch was taken to a hospital where he was treated for minor injuries.

The car fell about 25 feet down the embankment, and the crash closed Capital Boulevard southbound at Wade Avenue for more than five hours during the morning rush hour commute as police investigated the wreck and worked to retrieve the vehicle.

Surveillance video taken from a business on Capital Boulevard picked up the car as it sped the wrong way down Capital Boulevard before the crash.

David Dolan, the owner of Atlas Motor Co. on Capital Boulevard, said the speeding car was hard to watch.

"This is the first time something like this has happened," he said. "It’s terrifying to think that my wife could have been pulling out of here and met someone like that head on."
