Superintendent of Public Instruction Mark Johnson
Superintendent Mark Johnson heads North Carolina's Department of Public Instruction, the agency that oversees the state's K-through-12 schools.

He won the job by ousting long-time Democratic incumbent June Atkinson.
As Johnson began his tenure, lawmakers gave him more latitude to hire and fire staffers, which brought him into immediate conflict with the State Board of Education.
He is married and has one daughter.
