Republican Mark Johnson took over as superintendent of public instruction in January 2017.
He won the job by ousting long-time Democratic incumbent June Atkinson.
As Johnson began his tenure, lawmakers gave him more latitude to hire and fire staffers, which brought him into immediate conflict with the State Board of Education.
He is married and has one daughter.
