RALEIGH, N.C. — A Super Bowl buffet is a tradition for many, but it's important to have a reality check about how unlimited eating can affect your heart, especially when you add stress over the game.

For those with heart disease, high blood pressure or high cholesterol, some evidence suggests a single big meal can increase triglyceride levels and cause inflammation of the coronary arteries, which could prompt a heart attack.

"It definitely incurs a big risk to have a very large meal such as you would have on Super Bowl Sunday," Dr. Marvin Lipman said.

Stuffing yourself can lead to heartburn, gas, gout and can also precipitate gallbladder attacks in people with gallstones. And overeating can lead to weight gain, which puts more stress on the heart.

"I am not saying that somebody with underlying heart disease or hypertension can't indulge once in a while but not to the extent of 5,000 calories," Lipman said.

So this Super Bowl Sunday, don't scramble back and forth to that awesome buffet, maybe just watch the game.

Having a high protein snack before can curb cravings and keep you eating smaller portions of your favorite foods.
