HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. — State Department of Transportation officials on Monday awarded a $1.9 million contract to replace the bridge on Sunset Lake Road over Terrible Creek in southern Wake County.

The new bridge will replace a 59-year-old structure that is considered structurally deficient, which means engineers have had to monitor the bridge to ensure it maintains its structural integrity.

Atwell Construction Co. of Greenville will begin work on the bridge on June 29, and the new span is scheduled to be completed by Sept. 15, 2010. A temporary bridge will be built next to the new bridge to be used as a detour for traffic between Fuquay-Varina and Holly Springs during construction.
