Summer is here and libraries and bookstores across the region are kicking off their summer reading programs.

As part of these programs, kids usually get rewards or can attend special events that encourage reading throughout the summer - an important activity to ensure they don't forget what they learned during the school year. For more on why it's important for kids to read during the summer, check this fact sheet which summarizes some of the research.

It's also a great, free way to keep kids busy too during the hot summer months.

So here's where you'll find them:

  • Wake County has programs for kids, teens and adults. Click here for some details. Sign up for the program at your local library. Some libraries have already had special kick off events to launch the program, others haven't. For instance, Cameron Village Library in Raleigh will have a special program from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. June 18 featuring a high-energy storyteller. You don't need to attend the kick off events to participate.
  • Durham County Libraries will start up their summer programs for kids, teens and adults with a special event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 18 at the Main Library, East Regional Library, North Regional Library, South Regional Library, Southwest Regional Library and Stanford L. Warren Library. It's from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. June 17 at Bragtown Library & Family Literacy Center and the McDougald Terrace Community Library. The events will have a carnival feel with special activities, games, refreshments, giveaways and music. Click here for details.
  • Chapel Hill Public Library is registering readers for its summer programs now. Click here for details on events for kids. Click here for more on teen events.
  • Orange County Public Library is offering programs for kids, teens and adults.
  • The Public Library of Johnston County and Smithfield is registering readers now for its summer program and will have its first program at 10 a.m. Tuesday. The library will offer special programs through early August on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and most Thursdays. (Follow the link for the library and then click on "children" when you get to the main page for the Johnston County and Smithfield libraries to get more information).
  • Cumberland County Library has programs for kids, teens and adults.
  • Lee County's program starts Monday.
  • Harnett County programs start June 20.
  • Franklin County libraries will offer its program starting June 27.
  • And it looks like the Sampson-Clinton Public Library will kick off its summer reading program the week of June 27.

Some bookstores also offer summer reading programs. You'll find them at:

  • Borders lets kids 12 and under get a free book for reading ten. Click here for details.
  • Kids earn a free book for reading eight books in this Barnes & Noble deal.
  • And Flyleaf Books in Chapel Hill has a program for kids ages 9 to 12. Click here for details.

Happy reading!
