SPRING LAKE, N.C. — For the past two years, Marcus Allen, 28, was a music teacher at Cornerstone Baptist Church and Christian Academy. But his colleagues and kids said he taught so much more than music.
“Some of my toughest kids, they’re the ones most heartbroken by this,” said Joseph Ollis, Principal of Cornerstone Christian Academy.
Allen had such a heart for them. As Ollis describes it, he wanted to set their lives to music.

“He was not easy. He was tough on the kids. What he always said was no excuses, I want results,” said Ollis.

He taught all of Cornerstone's 145 students not to be afraid to lift their voices in harmony.

Allen wrote a song called "I'll Be Your Light,” that has become an anthem for the school.

But on Sunday, a day he would have gone to church, he laid in his yard lifeless.

Just after 1p.m. Sunday afternoon, someone spotted him on the ground outside of his single-wide mobile home on Governor Brandon Street.
A spokesman for the Harnett County Sheriff's Office says he had trauma on his body but would offer no details.

"We don't want to jeopardize the integrity of this investigation by releasing certain information at this time," Major Aaron Meredith wrote in a statement.

He also declined to release the 911 call because of what he calls "sensitive topics."

Cornerstone's pastor Josh Tadlock said Allen's greatest gift was to sing praises.

“His love for our Lord Jesus Christ, and then his desire to lead others in the worship of the Lord. That is really what he was all about — leading others in the worship of Christ,” said Tadlock.

His kids are heartbroken. But they have his song "I'll Be Your Light" in their hearts.
