FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Former Cumberland County Sheriff Moose Butler is being honored by the city of Fayetteville by having a street named after him.

The street outside his church, Massey Hill Baptist Church, will now be known as Moose Butler Lane.

Butler grew up in the Massey Hill part of town and was sheriff for more than 20 years.

Butler took his department through a number of changes, including making it a fully accredited law enforcement agency. Butler also spearheaded the building of a new $52 million detention center, but he said he will never forget his shopping with the sheriff program.
